Leading the list is MTN Nigeria Communications Plc (MTNN) with an interim dividend of ₦26 per share.

According to corporate disclosures compiled from NGX filings, the September dividend-paying companies span sectors including telecommunications, financial services, consumer goods, logistics, publishing and hospitality.

MTN Nigeria takes the spotlight

MTN Nigeria's ₦26 interim dividend is by far the largest dividend per share on this September list.

The company reported H1 2026 revenue of approximately ₦2.99 trillion and profit after tax of approximately ₦707.5 billion, representing 70.6% growth in profit after tax compared with the corresponding period.

The ₦26 dividend will be paid on September 7, 2026 to shareholders who qualified based on the company's register as at August 20, 2026.

An important warning for investors

Investors should not confuse the payment date with the qualification date.

A company may announce that it will pay a dividend in September, but investors who purchase the shares after the qualification/ex-dividend deadline may not be entitled to that particular payment.

Therefore, before buying a stock because of an advertised dividend, investors should check:

  1. Qualification date
  2. Ex-dividend date
  3. Register closure date
  4. Payment date
  5. Dividend history
  6. Earnings and cash-flow strength
  7. Current share price and valuation

Dividend investing requires more than chasing big payouts

A high dividend does not automatically make a stock a good investment.

The stronger approach is to examine whether the company has the earnings and cash generation necessary to maintain or increase its dividends over time.

For Nigerian investors building long-term portfolios, dividend-paying companies can provide an additional source of shareholder returns alongside potential capital appreciation.

Dowjones Resource Base Limited will continue to monitor NGX dividend announcements, corporate actions and shareholder opportunities.
